For the Love of Reading: a day celebrating stories, books and authors of Ontario
This full-day event, Saturday, October 5th at Durham Town Hall, 158 George St W, celebrates the amazing range of talented West Grey authors and their regional colleagues, through panels, visits, spotlights, sales and good eats!
Discover new reads, meet local and regional authors, and be immersed in the wonderful world of reading, storytelling, writing and publishing. Whatever kind of book you love, there's something here for everyone.
The all-access pass ($60) gets you into all the literary events as well as the evening Literary Fare meal. Or you can just attend a single event ($15/$30) - but why would you want to?
11am - Local author book sale - A dozen or more of the finest Grey County authors - with a dash of Wellington! Kids' books, YA, urban dystopian fantasy, memoir, vampires, fantasy-romance - it's all here.
1pm - Visit with Thanh Campbell, Orphan 32: Thanh shares his story as one of the last young children to be airlifted out of Saigon in 1975. It is a story of dislocation, exploration and hope. Orphan 32 is one of this year's Grey County Reads selections, championed by Southgate's Monica Singh Soares
2pm - Selected book-sale authors have 10 minutes to dazzle you - they might read from their latest work, answer your questions, or re-enact a favourite scene - their choice! Enjoy the fun - celebrate our local talent.
4pm - Join engaging local authors of different genres (Alanna Rusnak, Barbara MacLean, J.K. Gravier, Susan Cullen) as they explore the ways their reading informs their writing.
5:30pm - Literary Fare - food celebrating books celebrating food - well, a reader's gotta eat, right?
7pm - Visit with Dan Needles - Canada's celebrated townie-turned-farmer, winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and author of the much-lauded Wingfield stories, spends an evening with us. Dan's latest book, Finding Larkspur: A Return to Village Life is a funny and insightful look at Canadian villages, their inhabitants and their history, and their promise for the future. Join us for a fitting evening to a rollicking day of celebration!
